published on Monday, 31 March 2014

Are you shocked?

Well I'm not!

Five years after his death, there's a new Michael Jackson album.

Sony and Epic Records today announced a plan to release a posthumous Michael Jackson album titled Xscape. I hear the album will drop on May 13th.

Epic CEO L.A. Reid handpicked eight previously unreleased tracks by Michael Jackson, which have been 'contemporized for modern ears' and added new production by Timbaland and Rodney Jerkins.

Let's wait and see!

"Multiple Sclerosis did not kill Zara, ignorance did" - Yemisi Ilo blames family

published on

Nigerian singer, Zara Gretti has passed away at her home in Ogba, Lagos after battling with Multiple Sclerosis (an inflammatory disease in which the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged) for over a year.Creative consultant, Yemisi Ilo, has however condemned and blamed Zara’s family for her death."">She blamed Zara’s family for feeding with her with “Agbo and herbs” instead of sending her to the hospital.According to Yemi, she has also been battling Multiple Sclerosis for nearly 10 years and that Zara’s situation shouldn’t have deteriorated to the point of death.“I also have MS and I am currently in Singapore – where by His grace I will finally halt the progression and hopefully and prayerfully reverse some if not all disability. I spoke to Zara on Tuesday. She said she was being given ‘Agbo’ to drink by her family and that it was killing her. Those were her exact words. I told her NOT to drink it. With an already compromised immune system – Agbo is bullshit. It is poison. MS is not malaria. I gave Zara clear details of exactly what she needed to do to try to get well.” She wroteNarrating her encounter with Zara during the crisis, Yemisi stated, “It isn’t easy AT ALL – I should know but unfortunately for her, she was surrounded by very ignorant people at the end who felt that they knew best. I first heard of Zara when I read about her on Linda Ikeji‘s blog a year ago. I got in touch with her immediately and started a Skype friendship. I was in London and she was in the States (US). We spoke regularly. When I went back to Lagos, we would WhatsApp and I would call her."">“When she came to Nigeria in October last year, I went to see her and she was surprised that she could move better than me! I organized the Battabox interview (which we did at my parents house).“She said she didn’t want to live with her mum in the States – yet she had no one to look after her there apart from her mum. She needed someone. She even wanted to come and stay with me, but I am married with small children and my own MS issues were already enough for one house.“I am so pissed off, so angry, so f**king sad, teary and frustrated. If I had been in Nigeria, I would have gone to pick her up on Tuesday when I spoke to her. She was so desperate to leave Ogba.“She said she had a return ticket to America and would try to leave ASAP. I gave her my neurologist’s number so she could get some steroids to help her get over the horrible relapse she was having. Also to get her to explain the condition to Zara’s family so they would realize that this was not an ‘Agbo’ matter. I have had MS for nearly 10 years.“My walking has deteriorated and I am currently alternating between a walker and a wheelchair. Zara was worried that she wouldn’t get married and have kids – I told her that I had 4 kids and was happily married and continued to work and that there was hope.“I have always been vocal about MS and even appeared on a ‘Moments with Mo’ episode talking about it. There are many Nigerians with MS – I know a few but they want to keep quiet. Their families are embarrassed. Why? I don’t know?“It can happen to anyone at any time. Granted, I am extremely fortunate to have the strength of character and a loving and supportive and enlightened family to deal with this HORRIBLE condition that has led to this opportunity for me to undergo Hemapioetic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) – Google it. It has taken donations from over 100 people to do this. It costs over $150k (N24,727,501).“I told Zara that since she was a US citizen, she could get on a trial at the University of Chicago under Dr. Burt for free. I just want people to know that MS didn’t kill Zara – ignorance did. As well as our fatalistic attitude in Nigeria where everyone prays and no one takes action.” Yemisi concluded.

Boko Haram in failed jailbreak attempt in Abuja

published on

Heavy security around Aso Villa, FCT In spite of tight security, detained Boko Haram members on Sunday attempted a jailbreak at the headquarters of the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja. The incident led to heavy security build up around the Presidential  Villa which is about 100metres to the SSS headquarters. But the SSS said there is no cause for alarm because the jailbreak had been foiled.Despite the assurance from the SSS, there were sporadic shootings and booming of guns around the Villa and Aso Drive which is within the precincts of Aso Drive. Most residents of the highbrow drive were forced to remain indoors as soldiers were massively deployed from nearby barracks.A statement by the SSS Deputy Director for Public Affairs, the Deputy Director, Public Relations, Marilyn Ogar,  said the jailbreak occurred during  the breakfast session for the detainees. The statement  said: “At 0715 hours, the Service suspect handler went to the detention facility within the Headquarters to feed the suspects.“One of the suspects attempted to disarm him by hitting him at the back of his head with his handcuff.“His attempt to escape drew the attention of other guards at the facility who fired some shots to warn and deter others.” The gun shots attracted the attention of the military with whom we have an understanding of mutual assistance in the event of any threat.“The Army immediately deployed a team to reinforce our perimeter guards to forestall any external collaborators. The situation has since been brought under control. Further details will be communicated.”As at press time, heavy security had been built up around the Presidential Villa and the Federal Capital Territory by armed soldiers with military helicopters deployed in the area. There was suspicion that the jailbreak might be a prelude to a major attack on the Villa and Abuja.A reliable source said: “All military formations and security agencies had been put on the alert to ward off any aggression by the sect.“The Villa is being heavily protected as I speak with you. And movement in and around the SSS headquarters and the Villa restricted in the interim.”

Musician Zara Gretti Passes On at 28

published on

I remember singing "abokoku", some years back, and wondering why I hadn't heard any other song from Zara Gretti! Mololuwa would testify! We fell hard for Zara and when I heard the Nigerian-American singer whose real name is Margaret-Mary Joseph was fighting multiple sclerosis, I felt horrible!
Popularly known for her hit songs “The Flyest” and “Teno”, Zara was open about her battle with multiple sclerosis. She recently shared that she could no longer walk and could barely sleep. She was obviously in a lot of pain!
Zara is believed to have died today. The family hasn’t released a statement on her death yet but her former manager confirmed the news.
Zara had a cheerful heart and maintained good composure till her death. Before her death, she had been able to raise the sum of $14,046 out of the $23,000 needed to treat the disease.
The Mayo Clinic defines Multiple sclerosis (MS) as “a potentially debilitating disease in which your body’s immune system eats away at the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves. Damage to myelin causes interference in the communication between your brain, spinal cord and other areas of your body. This condition may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that’s not reversible.”
May her soul rest in peace!

When Big Boy acted surprised and said he didn't know Nick had slept with Kim, Nick replied, "Of course you knew...or you forgot because there have been many since me."

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Women Accept being Ignored - on Gender, Race & Love

published on

So Emma Brockes of The Guardian US, caught up with the 36-year old award winning fiction writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, in New York. Emma asked her about my favourite book, right now, Americanah, which focuses on gender, race, and natural hair. Y'all have to read the book, I fell in love with Chimamanda again! And the little comic reliefs inserted in the book? Genius!

Read some excerpts, of the interview,  I grabbed off BN below;

On gender in Americanah upsetting people: “I knew that was coming. I can’t write a book like that and then go, ‘Oh my God, they’re upset.’ But my intention wasn’t to upset. It’s just that I’m willing to if that’s what it takes to write the book.”

On gender in general: “Yes. When women do say something, not only is it more likely to be ignored, but the women themselves are accepting of it being ignored. So they’re less likely to push back. That happens less often in Nigeria. Women in corporate settings are more likely to be vocal…Because although there’s a lot of gender bullshit in Nigeria, I think women in the west have a lot more invested in being liked. And being liked if you’re female means a certain thing. So in workplaces, women who are bosses in Nigeria are fierce. The people who work for them, men and women, respect them. But, these are women who very keenly perform gender stereotypes when they go back home. And if they give a public interview, they have to say, ‘My husband supported me and allowed me to …’”On experiencing racism: She shares her encounter with a carpet-cleaner while babysitting in Philadelphia. “I remember opening the door and his face was such a cliche; he looked at me and his whole face fell. You know: I can’t believe I’m working for a black person. And he had such an attitude. And then when I said, ‘Mrs So and So said you were coming’, he changed and suddenly was my friend.”On her father reading Half of a Yellow Sun: “…I knew the novel would be good; I didn’t know it would be this good.’ And then he said thank you, ‘Our story has been recorded.’ I remember thinking, OK, it’s over. I don’t care what anybody else thinks. My father was central and he was so generous; I had used so many of his stories. It’s still very painful for him. And then writing it in a novel where people also have sex and scandalous things happen. I was like, oh my God, I don’t know what daddy’s going to think!”

On the Nigerian swagger: “We’re not popular in any part of Africa. And we’re rather proud of it. If I wasn’t Nigerian, I think I would understand why. There’s a kind of Nigerian aggressiveness … ‘Why shouldn’t we?’ We’ll do it very loudly and without much finesse, but hey. Inside Nigeria there are different cultures, but this is Nigerianness – it cuts across ethnic groups. I don’t know if it’s from our large size, I don’t know if it’s because we never had white people settle and stay. So Nigerians go to Kenya and Tanzania and we think, why are you so apologetic?”

On writing about love: ”Don’t we all in the end write about love? All literature is about love. When men do it, it’s a political comment on human relations. When women do it, it’s just a love story. So, although I wanted to do much more than a love story, a part of me wants to push back against the idea that love stories are not important. I wanted to use a love story to talk about other things. But really in the end, it’s just a love story.”
