I remember singing "abokoku", some years back, and wondering why I hadn't heard any other song from Zara Gretti! Mololuwa would testify! We fell hard for Zara and when I heard the Nigerian-American singer whose real name is Margaret-Mary Joseph was fighting multiple sclerosis, I felt horrible!
Popularly known for her hit songs “The Flyest” and “Teno”, Zara was open about her battle with multiple sclerosis. She recently shared that she could no longer walk and could barely sleep. She was obviously in a lot of pain!
Zara is believed to have died today. The family hasn’t released a statement on her death yet but her former manager confirmed the news.
Zara had a cheerful heart and maintained good composure till her death. Before her death, she had been able to raise the sum of $14,046 out of the $23,000 needed to treat the disease.
The Mayo Clinic defines Multiple sclerosis (MS) as “a potentially debilitating disease in which your body’s immune system eats away at the protective sheath (myelin) that covers your nerves. Damage to myelin causes interference in the communication between your brain, spinal cord and other areas of your body. This condition may result in deterioration of the nerves themselves, a process that’s not reversible.”
May her soul rest in peace!
