In class last week, I was given the assignment below;
You have interviewed Albert and Mabel Smith, whose family placed an ad in the classified section of your paper congratulating them on their golden wedding anniversary.
From the information below:
- Pick out three key quotes – look for something that adds colour and detail.
- Write an intro – remember 15-30 words; try and paint a word picture and make it attention grabbing.
- Write a story of 200-250 words that would appear in tomorrow’s edition of the Yeltham Express.
Albert and Mabel Smith of 40, Eastern Avenue, Yeltham.
Both aged 72.
Married at St Mary’s Church, Yeltham,
50 years ago today.
They have four children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. All will be present at a family party on Saturday at the Crown Hotel, Yeltham. The couple held their wedding reception at the hotel 50 years ago. Mr Smith worked for 40 years as a weaver at a local firm, Ridgeway Carpets, Yeltham. Mrs Smith was employed at various local clothing firms. She worked as a machinist. For many years both of them have been members of St Mary’s Church, Yeltham. Mrs Smith still sings in the choir at St Mary’s. Both of them spend a lot of time cycling. Both have been members of a local bicycle club called Yeltham Wheelers for over 50 years and still take part in most outings of the club to towns in the north of England. They met when he shared her tandem on a Saturday outing to Blackpool. He has held every office in the club. She is a former secretary of the club. He said: “My bike had a puncture so I was delighted when this bonny girl asked me to ride tandem with her.” She said: “My parents were keen cyclists and my sister and I often borrowed their tandem to go on outings together. On this particular occasion my sister had a heavy cold and couldn’t make it. Albert was a new member and when his bike sprung a puncture I suggested he ride with me instead. Our first kiss was on top of the big wheel at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and we’ve been together ever since.”
Here's my story;
COUPLE CELEBRATE WEDDING ANNIVERSARY IN THE SAME HOTEL WHERE THEIR WEDDING RECEPTION HELD 50 YEARS AGO
Every disappointment is a blessing in disguise, they say, and in Mabel and Albert Smith’s case, a punctured tire proved to be more of a blessing.
Their journey started on a tandem ride to Blackpool. In Albert’s words, “My bike had a puncture so I was delighted when this bonny girl asked me to ride tandem with her.”
On how they met, Mabel said, “My parents were keen cyclists and my sister and I often borrowed their tandem to go on outings together. On this particular occasion my sister had a heavy cold and couldn’t make it. Albert was a new member and when his bike sprung a puncture I suggested he ride with me instead.” According to Mabel; “Our first kiss was on top of the big wheel at Blackpool Pleasure Beach and we’ve been together ever since.”
With four children, nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, 72 year olds, Albert and Mabel Smith are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. A family party will hold, in their honor, on Saturday at the Crown Hotel, where the couple held their wedding reception, 50 years ago.
They both still spend a lot of time cycling as they have been members of a local bicycle club called Yeltham Wheelers for over 50 years.
The couple have remained members of St Mary’s Church where they were married 50 years ago and Mabel still sings in the choir.
