JK: In one sentence, describe your style.
Nkari: I will say my style is timeless, constantly redefined..basically errrrr…eclectic to sum it up in one word.
JK: What was growing up like for you?
Nkari: Growing up was fun, a lot of fun..I grew up with my grandmother in Calabar and being the youngest child in the house I got away with a lot of things like looking for other people’s trouble and crying at the top of my voice even when nobody touched me (laughs). I was a bit of a tomboy for the early part of my life, I remember I always wanted Timberlands and baggy trousers for Christmas day instead of the flowery dresses, hats and lace socks. Generally, I was a happy child..and life was good. (smiles)
JK: Educational background.
Nkari: I attended Command Nursery and Family Support Program School during my kindergarten and nursery years, then St Annes School. I did High school in Hillcrest Schools and I’m currently a Junior at The American University of Nigeria.
JK: When did you first discover your flare for fashion?
Nkari: Umm..sometime in Junior high..I think JS2 precisely. I had a drawing pad I called “Nk’s Fashion Mansion” (laughs) Every day I drew a girl in a beautiful dress and my book slowly became popular in my class because severally during a lecture, a teacher will caution me about drawing in class..my friends started calling me “Nk Fashion Mansion” (laughs)! Well, before then..basically it was just bits of this and that, I will cut and sew dresses for my dolls..cut my own clothes and “fold” them in. (Laughs)!
JK: have your parents always been supportive of your dream?
Nkari: Yes, my grandmother and mother have always been very supportive. I believe my grandmother played a very huge role in nurturing my desire to design clothes. We had two sewing machines at home and every time I wanted to “play” with my clothes, it was her threads and needles I always “stole” although it came with a good spanking most of the time, I believe we can all conveniently say it was a fair price (laughs)
JK: What's your fashion label name and why?
Nkari: My brand name is NEVE DYERI. Dyeri is my family name and Neve means radiant which is a word that represents me as a person.
JK:. How often do you introduce new designs?
Nkari: If you mean how often do I draw new designs…oh well..its not a daily thing, because of school work of course but about five times a week at least. And if you mean how often do I produce new collections..about every two months at least.
JK: What is the inspiration behind your designs?
Nkari: I can’t say there is one primary inspiration to my designs..except God of course…I could derive inspiration from absolutely anything. From a color on anything, to a beat of a song, when I close my eyes or even something as ordinary as a scroll, so I can’t point to anything precisely..I find new inspirations every day.
JK: At what rates do you charge for your services, in terms of sales?
Nkari: It depends on what exactly it is, the fabric and work that’s put into getting a piece made. But generally my prices are very affordable since I have at some point in my life felt the pain of a young lady that does not earn an income but wants pretty clothes beyond the amount her parents give her for shopping. (laughs)
JK: How often do you do fashion shows and photo shoots?
Nkari: I do fashion shows as often as I can..in the last nine months, I have had four fashion shows and several photo shoots in between.
JK: I'm sure the guys would love to know,do you have a boyfriend?
Nkari: Oh wow…errrr…emmm…we’ll get there eventually. Lets just say for now I’m focusing on building NEVE DYERI and getting a first class degree in Petroleum Chemistry.. boyfriend matter is secondary for now..well maybe in the near future..(Laughs)! There’s someone in the not so clear picture though. (Laughs)!
JK: What's the future looking like for you?
Nkari: The future looks really good sincerely, challenging of cause and I know everyday my creativity will be put to a test but I believe with a lot of hard work and focus NEVE DYERI will grow beyond my expectations.
JK: Before we go,I always have a parting question! If you were to come back to life again as a popular fashionista, who would it be and why?
Nkari: I don’t think there is a particular fashionista I will want to come back as, maybe a mix of some fashionista’s like Coco Chanel, Kimora and Lady Gaga basically because all three women share something that I relate to..Creativity, Passion and ano Uncanny Ability to succeed!
