Ø Educational background
I attended St. Saviours primary school, then proceeded to Grace High School for my secondary school education, after which I graduated with a BSc. in Mass Communications from Igbinedion University.
Ø How did you get started in the business?
Getting started was quite easy and interesting because I have always found myself doing that which I love most. I was a lover of colors and I could do anything to give my face a new lift and look. With my love for colors and making myself up, I came across Banke Meshida Lawal (Banke inspires me everytime), whose works I totally fell in love with. After a period of time, i took a final decision of going into the business full time since it is been what I have always loved doing.
Ø What kind of work do you do and/or specialize in?
The only work or job I do is strictly make-up business – ranging from giving my customers and clients a new look either for their weddings, or for their evening looks. Over the years I can bet I have given my clients and customers that subtle finish and flawless skin they have always dreamed of.
Ø Any make-up artists that inspire you?
Like I said before Banke Meshide, then, Sam Fine for starters, he has this perfect finish to his work that just keeps you looking amazing and of cause our very own Lolade Ogunjimi.
Ø Tell us about your personal style…
Personally I love keeping it simple, as long as I have everything in the right proportion and in the right places.
Ø Where do you see yourself in ten years?
The market is tight and the competition is definitely and obviously high but in the next 10years I hope to be a household name by Gods Grace. I hope to become a mentor and a source of inspiration to some people too.
Ø What is your favorite part about your job?
No other part than seeing my customers smile after giving them the look they desire. Its such a transforming process, so the best I can look forward to is to see that smile on their faces.
Ø What are your must-have makeup products?
Whenever I open my kit, I definitely must find my blush, eye liner and mascara waiting to be used.
Ø What would you say to the woman who says that wearing makeup is all about pretending to be someone you're not?
Applying make-up is not about pretending to be someone you are not, make-up enhances your beauty, it brings out the real you and gives you an amazing look. Stop a bride on her wedding day and ask her how she feels putting on her wedding gown….her response is exactly how a woman feels looking into the mirror after applying make-up.
Ø What kind of advice do you have for other artists or aspiring artists?
Just few words – Go for your dream, do what you love, there is an opportunity out there for everyone!
Ø Final thoughts from Derin
Seeing the smiles of my customers give me joy, it motivates me; it speaks louder than their words, and it has always given reasons to forge ahead.
