JK. In one sentence, who is Shine?
Shyne: Shyne is a near novelty preteen delivering R&B and Soul.
JK. What was growing up like for you?
Shyne: Wow, growing up wasn't as pleasant for me as most kids would have it. I got kicked out at the age of sixteen by my Dad as a result of a misunderstanding being the fact that it was a polygamous home, so see what I mean by not having a pleasant upbringing. At a young age, I became a man quick and had to learn to fend for myself. I slept in front of churches at Oshodi, and to feed, I would go to traffic to sell stuff. However today I thank GOD for where I am and the way it has all turned out because it all made me a better person.
JK. Educational background?
Shyne: Being the fact that I got kicked out at that age, I had to stop school. Although the school was free, I was unable to pay for the necessities such as textbooks, uniforms, school shoes and all.
JK. Why the name Shine?
Shyne: *laughs. The name Shine is a prophecy. Looking back to my story, it says a lot, from my background to where I am today. God has really blessed me and I know he put me here to shine.
JK. Why music?
Shyne: It's just who I am. Music is everything to me. I grew up with music around me and after I was kicked out, it became my escape and a way for me to find peace.
JK. What was your first time in the studio like?
Shyne: The first time wasn't easy o. As in I had never recorded in a studio until my boss Nino found me. He believed in me and knew I had something to share with the world, which was why he even started the label Diesel Music. Nino knew I had what it took and having heard my story as a child, he was touched and wanted to do everything possible to make sure it would be a story that will inspire others who found themselves in my situation.
JK. Who have you worked with in the industry?
Shyne: My very first collaboration was with Smoothy who is also on the label. I've also worked with 9ice which was a dream come true because he is someone I always admired, and on my new single out now Follow Me, I worked with F. Shaw.
JK. In your career so far, what has been your best and also your worst experience?
Shyne: Best experience so far I'd say performing alongside some industry heavyweights. I was an opening act at the Bashorun Gaa concert, which held at Eko hotel and also the Celebrity basketball faceoff. I guess the worst experience would be my early days. You know how it is when people wouldn't listen to you, but I thank God today I got listening ears and my music is reaching and inspiring people.
JK. Does Shine have a girlfriend?
Shyne: (laughs) Yes I have a girlfriend and her name is music. She has all of my attention. Right now, my music is everything to me and she's all I've got time for.
JK. You just released a new track "follow me" tell JK about it. What inspired it?
Shyne: Follow me is a story which I put in a melodious way. A guy meets a girl at a club, and is trying to woo and convince her to go home with him. That's the idea of Follow Me which features F. Shaw who rapped and did his thing on the track.
JK. Who do you wish to work with in the industry? Both local and international?
Shyne: The industry is filled with a lot of great talents, who I really can't wait to work with. Locally, I'd like to work with 2 face, Asa, MI, Vector and a few others, and international, my dream is to work with Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Adele, and Melanie Fiona.
JK. What should we expect from Shine in the next five years?
Shyne: More great music, world tours, and exceptional collaborations.
JK. What's your advice to upcoming artistes out there?
Shyne: Stay focused, be good with what you are doing, and prepare because when preparation meets opportunity they take you places.
JK. Finally, if you we're to come back to earth as a Nigerian female comedian, who would it be and why?
Shyne: Funke Akindele. She has a great sense of humor with the ability to make everyone around her smile and laugh hard.
