I haven't posted an interview in a while because I've been in the kitchen cooking up surprises. Remember my blog isn't just about the amebo, but one of its major purposes is to promote young minds making waves in thier various realms.
All that being said, with no further ado, I present to you the ace-producer; Coublon. Better known to his friends and family as Akwuba Charles Ugochukwu, this shy and creative young man has worked with the likes of Iyanya, Chidinma and ILLBliss to name a few and is the mastermind behind hit tracks like Le kwa Ukwu. I got to meet him a few days ago and here's what he had to say.
Enjoy;
JK. In one sentence, who is coublon?
COUBLON. My Name is Akwuba Charles Ugochukwu, a never-joke-with-music kinda guy.
JK. What was growing up like for you?
COUBLON. Growing up was a little tough especially when it had to do with music because it wasn't an idea my parents supported with the way I took it personally. So I had to make use of every music opportunity I'd found myself in. Then I joined the choir, Jumped into close studios and so on. It wasn't easy though.
JK. Your educational background?
COUBLON. I'm a graduate of Veritas University, Abuja. I studied physics with electronics.
JK. What was the dream for your future as a child?
COUBLON. As a child, I wanted to be an Electronics Engineer.
JK. What changed? Why music?
COUBLON. I think it's God's call to service. (Laughs). Although I've been building it right from my secondary school when I sequenced beats on our school keyboard and felt funky with them till I took it to the computers to become a professional. Thing is... It's just the passion I have for it.
JK. Why the name coublon?
COUBLON. Hmmmm... Coublon™... Hehehe... To tell you the truth, the name Coublon™ was actually a 'mockery' of my surname by my colleagues back then in secondary school. So I had to stick to it so as not to feel the pain when I'm being called like that. And also allow them feel unsuccessful if they are trying to get me annoyed. Until one day, I just felt this "rejected stone"(the name Coublon™) is somehow a corner stone oh. And so picked it up and lived with it.
JK. Who influenced your going into music?
COUBLON. My Immediate younger brother.
JK. What was your family's first opinion about your going into music?
COUBLON. It wasn't a bad idea to them till it was beginning to look like they had made a mistake. But I'm here to prove that wrong.
JK. How did the track with Iyanya, Le kwa ukwu, happen?
COUBLON. Hmmm, Le Kwa Ukwu. To cut the looong story short, it all started from an empty night during the studio session but we didn't force the inspiration, so Iyanya and I went to sleep, woke up the next morning and something different come to my head then saw that he had the same idea. It was a huge coincidence. So we went ahead, Hit it, and in less than 2Hrs, Le Kwa Ukwu was made.
JK. Did you expect it to be a big hit?
COUBLON. From the first instrument I played (The Kick), It was already a hit. Then his vocal delivery confirmed it.
JK. Who else have you produced for?
COUBLON. Worked with Iyanya, Phyno, Splash, Ruffcoin, Chidinma, ILLBliss, Ayoola MTN PF, iMike, 2shotz,...... I've lost count (wide grin).
JK. What are your long term goals? Where do you see yourself in 5years?
COUBLON. It's all in the hands of God. All I keep praying for is long life to enjoy the fruits of our labour. I only want to be better than my yesterday.
JK. Any advice for upcoming producers?
COUBLON. Keep working hard, it'll definitely pay. True success is a combination of so many try-agains. Do not be greedy. It Kills. Career-wise.
JK. If you were not in music what would you have ventured into?
COUBLON. I'd be a visual Artist, Graphics designer, or a Computer Analyst.
JK. Finally, if you were to come back to this world as an animal, what animal would you be and why?
COUBLON. Ant. So I can die quickly and come back as something better. Like... A Big Soldier ant. Then I can be king of one small colony. (Laughs).
Fin.
