GIST FROM THE MTV VMAs!!!!!
published on Monday, 29 August 2011
This year, it was fun to start watching the VMAs before my naija people. It was hilarious seeing Nigerians vent on twitter and other social networks about how "naija carries last" everytime. Apart from a few things though, the show was spectacular.
Lady Gaga opened the show with a nice little drama; acting as her alter-ego; Joe and a great performance to go with it. I was thinking she would have gone back stage to quickly slip into another one of her outrageous outfits but it seems like she's all grown up and has left the childish outfits for Nikki Minaj. (even though i still totally love Nikki!) Lady Gaga won the award for best female video for her video "born this way" and trust her to end her thank you speech saying; "Gay, straight, bi, trans-gendered -- you were born this way." Adele's performance on the other hand was powerful but short.
The biggest shock of the night however was Beyonce's pregnancy. It was something I definitely did not expect. Her performance was great as usual. The world at the end shared a blissful moment with her and her husband JayZ and also the ever hyper rapper; Kanye West. Both rappers JayZ and Kanye West had previously performed their hit song Otis and blew the crowd away. I however have a feeling that JayZ will bring tims back; but let's watch and see sha. Justin Bieber by the way took home the moonman for the best male video for "u smile".
Another person that got people's tongues wagging was Chris Brown! MTV welcomed him back for the first time since pleading guilty to assaulting Rihanna in 2009. His performance left the crowd "high" literally as he was hoping all over the place. "Everybody loved breezy" but sadly he wasn't given a moonman. Pitbull and Neyo also performed thier hit song together.
Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator had a breakout night as he was given the moonman for the best new act. He has been the center of a media-driven controversy for much of 2011, as his lyrics collide the mundane with the violent. Yet Tyler seemed overwhelmed as he got on stage, admitting he was nervous and had dreamt of winning a "Moonman," since he was 9. Though his songs are littered with images of rape and murder, MTV producers steered from controversy and instead had him dance with Will Ferrell and Jack Black; but it was Katy Perry who took home video of the year for "Firework." It was her second award of the night, as she earlier won best collaboration with Kanye West for her video "E.T". But one thing baffled me though; why look Kanye West of all people in the eye and ask if this is his first moonman really? i loved Kanye's reply though!
Moving on, Britney Spears took the best video award for "Till the World Ends" and was given a short tribute by Lady gaga. They both introduced Beyonce's performance, while Russell Brand payed homage to Amy Winehouse. Bruno Mars performed her hit song; valerie. I even forgot to mention Jessie J. The young lady broke her foot earlier this month but that hasn't stopped her. She and her band were the live on entertainment for the night and need I say it, it was getting pretty annoying hearing her voice before and after ads!
The show ended with Lil Wayne performing "how to love" and "John" which both are two songs from his "Tha Carter IV," album which will be released tomorrow. I loved the way he gave "John" a full rock-band presentation. Most of his words though were bleeped out but his glitchy vocals sputtered and spat over the heavy metal treatment. But most people on twitter were not impressed.
IT IS WELL!!!
