JK MEETS IBK (SPACESHIPBOI)!!!!

Emuwawon Ibukun Kevin AKA IBK, SPACESHIPBOI recently won Don Jazzy's infamous Enigma competition. The last child of the family; "omomo" as he calls it, IBK has had his difficult times but he is in a whole one jolly fellow. And he didn't hesitate to share with JK; about his past, his Enigma experience and his future. ENJOY!!

JK. Who is Emuwawon Ibukun Kevin?

IBK: Can I start by taking you back to the popular primary school response to questions? Aunty I, I, I! Laughs. That's my real name and I love the fact that my name is Ibukun because, it means blessing and that's what I am here to do. I am a Simple, playful and Conscious dude with  the drive to inspire and direct people to the "Way" where their full potential would be maximised. Emuwawon Ibukun Kevin is also known as IBK aka Spaceshipboi. He is a Producer, Rapper, Singer and voice Trainer .

JK.What was growing up like for you?

IBK: Warri! My birth city and where it all began. I am the 4th in a family of Four children, that makes me the omomo of the house (laughs). Growing up was fun and exciting with its shares of up's and down's. I remember secondary school and how I longed to finish because I was tired of seeing teachers holding canes and lashing the living day light out of noise makers (laughs). I grew up watching lots of cartoons and western movies and digesting the American sound as a young lad. My older brother was my major role model, I did anything I saw him do. It wasn't all rosey, we had our difficult times as a family but God saw us through.


JK.Educational background

IBK: I was privileged to go to good schools
Primary: N.N.P.C nursery and primary school
Secondary: College of Education(Demonstration secondary school)
Tertiary: Covenant University were I studied to become a Computer Engineer.

JK.When did you first notice your flare for music?

IBK: at age five I remember pulling up one of the dinning table seats, placing it close to the shelf so I could reach were the record player was placed and play my fav record by Leo Sayer (one man band). Started writing and recording songs at a tender age, but my self-consciousness as regards taking my gift serious, happened when my Sister told me and she said"you have a beautiful voice, if only you develop it". It was like someone flicked the light switch and it came on.



JK.When I saw your picture at first,I couldn't place the name; "spaceshipboi" on that face. What made you pick up the name?

IBK: It fits the description of what I am about in terms of my sound as a Music Producer, which is Unique and exclusive to the Spaceshipboi brand, different but sweet to your ears taste buds, fresh and it always stands out. I like breaking musical laws with music itself and the fact that I have never been within the walls of a musical training institute, makes my application raw and natural, like wild honey unrefined. Its pure God given talent.

JK.What made you enter the enigma competition considering all the work you've done and the ones in the works?

IBK: initially, I wasn't interested in any competition. I was working on my album project and out to push my new single. It was at the last hours I would say I saw the opportunity to bless people and be blessed at the same time. I put out my pilot single; I HAVE A DREAM prior to the competition, and I saw an opportunity to
1. Shine more light on that single via this competition
2. Get people blessed through the message and inspire them to be the best they can be.
It had a wide media attention and my entrepreneurial senses started tingling (hehehehe)

JK.Did you expect to win at all?

IBK: Winning for me was to achieve what I set out to do which was to inspire and get people pumped up to become achievers and have dreams. Making people know that temptation is inevitable, but it is the way we respond that would take us from the jail house to the Kings palace; that was my definition of wining. When I saw peoples response on the different social network sites and how someone tweeted"I just heard spaceshipboi's version, kai! I have to make mine over again" or when I heard some ones PR was telling his artist "have you heard spaceshipboi's version, this is what we are up against". It made me feel fulfilled because the record triggered people to up their game; for me, that meant a lot; and with this definition of what wining meant to me, o yea! I expected to win. Any other thing that followed was secondary or an added victory.

JK. I personally love the track and the creativity to it. What inspired it?

IBK: God did! My dear. The rain,thunder,soldier stomp effects and the extra vocals at the beginning of the record, was to enhance the gothic feel which the beat already had. It was perfect for the message that came with it.

JK.After the list of the top ten enigmas came out,how did you feel?

IBK: I felt super! I was happy that it made it on there. I said to myself "now, more people would hear and be blessed by it".

JK.The voting process was another battle,how did you get so many people to campaign for you? Because I remember my cousin,telling me to vote for "her friend;IBK".

IBK: people received the record quite well. Not that I expected less in my heart of hearts (Big smile). I have friends that believe and support my work, I give them the credit for the push on various social sites. God bless you guys for supporting good music and believing in me. If I were to sit back and ask myself; "why? why did people respond the way they did?". I can only come up with one answer and that is; " that's how the creator of the universe wrote the story", and I am ever grateful.


JK. After you won,what was going through your mind? How did you feel?

IBK: I was excited, happy, elated, give me another word....ermm...omo! My belly was sugar factory!(Laughs). But yea, I realised that I just moved to another phase in my journey to fulfilling destiny and I felt the responsibility bar move up another notch.

JK.Has winning changed anything in your life?

IBK: (in an American accent)it sure don changed my bank account! (Laughs!). But other than that, wining has opened me up to more people and the knowledge of IBK aka spaceshipboi has grown in and out of the country. Now people retweet what I put out and I am so grateful that God inspires me to put up good posts that add positive mental value to our youths.


JK.Everybody wants to know this. What will IBK do with the money?

IBK: kimon! Ok let me start (clears throat). I will buy a jeep, go on a holiday trip to dubai, omo! I will buy land and start to build house sef (in vanacular). Just messing with you. I will use it wisely, that's all you have to know.

JK.Stepping aside from the enigma aspect,who have you worked with in the industry?

IBK: good one, I have worked with quite a few but all talented artists. Up and coming, to established acts include: Bez,Waje,Praiz,Lindsey from the project fame academy; 2010,Modele,Muna,Sound-Sultan,Blaise,Omolara,Joan,Chi-Chi,Durella,Cobhams, new rapper called Tasti,Gloria, new singer Ocean,Yemi Alade,Saeon,S.D.C
Just to mention a few.

JK. Tell us more about your past jobs.

IBK: What would you like to know? That the last single I put out has been nominated for a grammy?(Amen!!).
I have couple of great records out inclusive of short songs. I love making short songs of about 0:57sec or 1min. It's like a message in musical form and you just keep playing it over and over again. There is power in constant hearing, that's my secrete. I have made remakes of songs like I gotcha by Lupe Fiasco, say something by Timbaland and Drake, something bigger by MaryMary and I also have my original pieces out. I made a record called "Tongues" in 2009, y'all need to hear that one it's awesome. It became the single of the month on soundcity blast magazine. JK.Girls have been asking and I thought to ask, does ibk have a girlfriend?

IBK: oh yes he has a girl friend and she is in MARS! When I am done with your planet, I will head out in my MartianShip and live happily ever after with her(BIG GRIN). But for now, let me do the work of He that sent me.

JK.What is the future looking like for IBK-spaceshipboi?

IBK: bright is the word. It's going to be a great journey and I pray for God's guidance and to be sensitive to what He is saying, every step of the way.

JK.Before you go,I always have a parting question for every interview. If you were to come back to life as a popular Nigerian yoruba actor,who would it be and why?

IBK: (laughs) omg! I will come back as my fav yoruba actor of all time PaPa Aluwe. He is a great actor and a brilliant comedian. I love watching him do his thing in his element.
